Dear PLN family members and readers,
Last year has flown by again. We started 2021 optimistic, full of plans. And once again we had to adapt to the Covid pandemic. But at the PLN Foundation we always look at what we can do and we prefer to think in terms of solutions.
No PLN Monster Tour … but again a very successful PLN Dutch cycle event. And in 2022 we will organize both: the PLN Monster Tour in Norway and the PLN Bicycle Tour in the Netherlands. Plans are being made: stay tuned!
No physical PLN Info Day … but a well-attended Webinar, several clinical lessons for cardiologists and a very successful first small-scale regional meeting. This regional meeting was well received by the press and generated a lot of attention. From local newspapers to national TV. Our volunteer Annette managed the exploded mailbox until late into the night.
No possibility to collect blood at the PLN Info day? Then we will make other plans. Because researchers are eager for blood from PLN carriers for further research. This is how the idea for the PLN Blood Bus and its own PLN Biobank was born. At the beginning of this month, with financial support from the Contribute Foundation and after a lot of legal hurdles in which we received fantastic help from the Durrer Center and the Netherlands Heart Institute, we received the good news: the Dutch PLN Biobank has been officially approved.
Great projects are underway in collaboration with the research agency Catalyze. A clear picture of our path for the future emerged. What are we doing it all for? First, to find a safe and affordable treatment method for PLN. Secondly, to create more awareness for PLN: finding and informing PLN carriers.
I flew to the US labs as soon as the travel regulations allowed this. Motivate, stimulate and connect. Giving everyone a piece of our passion and emphasize how important our purpose is. Personal contact is irreplaceable.
A treatment method is slowly coming into sight. This year, two great grants were awarded with a total budget of 4.3 million euros. These grants are partly based on results obtained from research that was initially financed by our Foundation. Funding out-of-the-box ideas and young talent works. That is why several Crazy Ideas will be awarded this year.
I am convinced that we will come one step closer to the solution next year and that there will be more awareness for PLN! I am proud of all the volunteers and our team. I wish everyone happy holidays and all the best for 2022. Let’s make it a fantastic year. Pieter Glijnis
